Yup, that’s me! Wearing the Classic Red, Revlon’s Cherries In The Snow
What most people don’t know about me is that I love lipstick, especially a nude lip. Funny thing though…when the holidays roll around, all I want to do is wear a red lip. As we are in the throws of a pandemic and masking is a must, it is a little impractical and might feel a bit off right now. But did you know that craving a little glamour during difficult times is not all that unusual?
It’s called The Lipstick Effect a term coined by Leonard Lauder of Estée Lauder in 2001. The thought is that during times of hardship when concerned about the economy people are less likely to purchase what is considered “luxury goods”. A lipstick even a high-end brand could be a small guilt-free indulgence. During WWII women were encouraged to take care of their appearance in order to keep public morale high, and women took up that challenge.
During WWII red lipstick was a best seller. Elizabeth Arden made a makeup kit specifically for The American Marine Corps Women’s Reserve. The kit contained a red lipstick that matched their uniforms. During the war beauty became a woman’s duty and a red lip of course was front and center. If you would like more information on US Marine Corp Women or Elizabeth Arden here are a couple of options.
We have all found out that lipstick under a mask is a recipe for disaster. So how can you wear your favorite red lipstick and arrive at your destination with your lipstick intact? Here is what I have been using for the past few months. A little Hanibal Lecter I know but stick with me!!!
There are small clips on the sides that you attach to the folds in your mask or you can simply place the frame over your mouth then put your mask over the frame. I’ve been wearing it for a few weeks, not only has it protected my lipstick. My mask is no longer vacuum-sealed to my face with every inhale. You simply wash the frame with warm soap and water to keep it clean and you’re ready for the next wear. So YES you can wear your favorite red lippie this holiday season and worry-free!
Be aware that the sizes do vary. What I purchased is perfect for me, but won’t work for a man with a beard. Check the reviews before you purchase.
